Ms. Greek 2018: An Inspiring Night

A major event in EMU’s Greek community every spring is fraternity Delta Tau Delta’s Ms. Greek pageant. For this event, nine sororities choose one woman to be their delegate and to fundraise for 3 months leading up to competing in a pageant, with all proceeds going towards Delta Tau Delta’s philanthropy, JDRF. With a JDRF Youth Ambassador speaker, three lovely judges, and nine motivated sororities, the event was inspirational and brought the EMU Greek community closer.

This year, Sigma Kappa - Delta Alpha's delegate was sister Maria Demos. Maria is a junior here at Eastern, double majoring in psychology and communication. She was compelled to run for Ms. Greek delegate because she "has a strong passion for service and is always dedicated to whatever she does in life", so she knew she would be a great representative for Sigma Kappa. Maria also "loves getting involved in the Greek community and wanted to gain more friendships within our great community" through Ms. Greek.

Over the 3 months leading up to the pageant, she fundraised through a dine to donate at Buffalo Wild Wings, selling t-shirts, going to local restaurants to see if they wanted to help the cause, and even getting her church community involved as well. For her talent in the pageant, Maria decided to remake Drake’s “God’s Plan” music video. She wanted to show that it doesn’t take nearly any money to make a person's day by handing out balloons and doing other various service events such as spending time at Memory Lane Assisted Living Home. Regarding her unique talent decision, Maria stated that "time is the best gift you can give someone because you are giving a portion of your own time that you will never get back."

In the Ms. Greek pageant, Maria competed along side eight other Greek women who also had amazing talents and held numerous fundraising events in the Greek community for Ms. Greek! In the end, Maria was awarded overall Ms. Greek winner and raised over $1,300, contributing a significant amount to the whopping $10,000 raised in total from every chapter for Delta Tau Delta's philanthropy, JDRF! Delta Alpha could not be more proud of our Greek community and sister, Maria!
